***INCLUDES DIGITAL ALBUM, COVER ART AND VISUALIZER FOR "I CAN FEEL IT" WITH YOUR DOWNLOAD***

The great disco takedown on July 12, 1979 only proved one thing: it wasn't completely all about disco. As the legend tells, the majority of the records that were blown up at Comiskey Park were records by black artists. Disco records, funk records, R&B records, etc. Like I've said, disco got too black and they had to destroy it. But it only morphed into a new genre of music that still continues to inspire 'til this very day: house music.

Being born and raised in Newark, house music was a staple in my household. If it wasn't on the radio while my mom was getting ready to go to Zanzibar with my Aunt Michelle (rest well Auntie) then it was Sunday Classics on WBLS OR 98.7 Kiss FM. While working on Black Boy Wonderment, she told me a story about being pregnant with me and sitting on the speakers at Zanzibar. I'm just gonna say that had a lot to do with my musical journey being so beat heavy. The thump, the rumble, I live for it.

Mr. Saturday Night was born after watching an HBO documentary of the same name. I was rather intrigued by how the popular black artists were completely left out of the narrative and the focus was on the glory that is Saturday Night Fever. Not to take away anything from John Travolta or Robert Stigwood but...where was the color? While I enjoyed the story (as I love documentaries), I was again inspired to go on a warpath to bring the blackness back to the story of house music. Of disco, of flipping on dirty mattresses with Tony Humphries on the radio. The anticipation of summertime, the BBQs, the Percolator battles. I guess, secretly, I'm still stuck there because that's where I feel the pureness of joy.

I've been silently dealing with a lot of changes in the background and felt like I was falling into the energy of self-sabotage and depression. I am truly grateful to The Muses for this assignment, the dedication to doing the work and the determination to see it through.

HEADS UP: "the freakshow."? Yeah, you're gonna need headphones for that. You've been warned.

I love yall like always,
IZM.
