about

Black Boy Wonderment details a black man's journey toward operating in a higher vibration.

The majority of my albums had a dark overtone that I didn't want to carry over into my 9th project (in total including my mixtape from 2012 and the Dark Alley Echoes side project in 2017). After working with UnUsual on "Selecta" and seeing how people seemed to gravitate more toward me doing house-inspired music, I decided to a risk and go full house on this album.

A lot of the trauma that I experienced in life was at the hands and mouths of other black boys. In order for me to reverse the effects of the trauma, I wanted to work with black boys specifically on this album. I was so nervous about reaching out to the features, especially Smve and Thelonious, as I was unsure if they'd be down for it. To my surprise, they completely immersed themselves in it. At that point, I felt the trauma, the fear of collaborating and working with my brothers falling, melting away.

This isn't just another album. This is me trying to vibrate higher. This is me breaking down the fears I've had of other black men and being a black man myself my whole life. This is a black man reclaiming a genre of music that was put in the hands of white men. Because of Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Tee Scott, Ron Hardy, I can live my truth in house music. Because of them, I don't have to shy away from using pronouns. Because of them, I can talk my shit. House music was created by gay black DJs and, of course, they don't want you to know that. They will do everything they can to erase our contribution to a genre of music that took over the fuckin world.

Now, it's time to do it all over again. I truly hope you enjoy this album.

To Akil whose trumpet solo on “Issit Innit” took the whole song to another level: thank you fam for taking out the time to bless me. To Regg Famouz: you saved “Interastral Jungle” and I’ll forever thank you and tell the story of it. Thank you for being a part of this new era of mine. To Smve Peri: My Earth day twin, I thank God for putting you in my life brother. You’ve taught me a lot about dedication, positive living and brotherhood. And you killed this shit. To Emilio: you saved my baby. Thank you for coming in during a possible miscarriage and helping me give birth. You just don’t know how grateful I am. Thank you to my family and friends for your love, patience and support. Thank you to my ancestors for opening the skies for me, for your protection, for your intercession. I am because of you. Peace to everyone in the beat community of NJ/NY. To QXT’s, 9th Haus, Sound In Color, Brooklyn Wildlife, Mixed Pleasures and every promoter who’s ever booked me. To everyone who’s come to the shows, who’s BOUGHT the music, who’s SHARED the music, who’s taking time out to encourage me in moments of self-doubt and insecurity. It is your strength and love that keeps me going. I love y’all.
