about

GESTATION: May 2020
DATE OF BIRTH: November 23, 2021

Seems like a lot of us artists got pregnant during lockdown because EVERY MUHFUCKIN BODY had babies in 2021. But this one was almost aborted. I had fallen into a depression and lost all interest in finishing this project. Or the second poetry book that I started. Or designing my own outfits. Or picking up the QuoteMe Collection (which was rebranded into black boy wonderment. in 2021. Thank all of you who supported the relaunch).

In Da House was supposed to be the brother component to Black Boy Wonderment and it ended up being the complete opposite. I didn't play piano as much, I freaked a lot of samples and vocal chops. This time around, there weren't any crazy verses and that made me nervous. It didn't feel something like that should be released because I wasn't rapping all over the place so I just stopped. But the music felt so good to me. It wasn't what I did on Wonderment. It was....party music. I never in my life thought I'd be making party music. But here I am. I resumed work on the album in 2021 and finally found the story in it while resuming recording and mixing.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Sometimes, you gotta let shit breathe. When us artists receive our downloads from the muses, we get so thrilled that we just want to keep receiving. But when it stops, at times you feel lost. And then the process starts to feel like work and you abandon ship. But In Da House taught me to let things breathe. I could've released this last year and it would've been another one of those "I wish I took more time on this" albums. And honestly, I didn't want that. You all deserve more than that. And I can't thank you enough for spending another birthday with me.

Hope you like the album. Well, this mixtape album. And get your muthfuckin dance on. For the past year we've had. For the loved ones we've lost. For the private battles we've soldiered through. Dance, my friends. DANCE.

Love always,
Izzy
