A lot of my talks with UnUsual were always uplifting and encouraging. He poured into me ways to calm my head and bring myself to a good center. Did I do it? A few times. But I allowed my life and my circumstances and my lack to blind me realigning myself with that which I truly desired. I said to him one day: “Before you throw away AAAAAAAAAANY beats, send them to me.”Thats what happened with “The Great In Me”. He was about to can it and he sent it to me and everything in me much came alive. All of the emotions I surpressed, all of the pain I locked away, all of the hoes that did me wrong, all of the feelings being alienated and
abandoned….it all came to a head and I just bled myself on the beat.
This is, in my opinion, one of the best songs that I do at my live shows. After the first time I performed it in front of people, I realized the exact potential that it had in really captivating an audience. I really feel the beat when I perform this. I am obsessed with the bass line. I love the drums. And to think he was going to throw this away. He es loco for real. The beat UnUsual gave me the template to tell my life story. I honestly dont think he understand how pivotal he was in the creation of my style. He became my J Dilla. Every song concept I had, every 16 I wrote, every beat I made, every time I had stuff fresh from the studio, he was the first person to get it (before I met Dave Jackson [check the credits]). He pushed me to get out of my head and let go. And that is exactly what I do every time I perform this song live.
I want to leave a message with people that even when you think you are at your most disgusting and frail and broken, it is at that moment where God finds you the most beautiful thing and He re-directs your life to force you to see that He placed a greatness in you that no one can deny or take from you. And I am grateful for the great in me.
